UNWTO Webinar on Institutional Strengthening in Destination Management: Preparing DMOs for new challenges
29 May 2019
Location:

Many factors account for the increased focus on effective destination management, all of them urging Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) to face and adapt to new challenges.

This webinar will set the scene on the concept of destination management and DMOs, their current challenges and their role as leading organizations with a broader mandate which includes strategic planning, coordination and management of a full range of activities within an adequate governance structure with the integration of different stakeholders operating in the destination under common goals.

This webinar aims to stress the relevance of having a leading organizational entity at destination level and of setting a sound framework of criteria and indicators for DMOs, based on the UNWTO.QUEST Certification - with the 17 SDGs incorporated in their plans and policies – and it will provide a set of recommendations for DMOs to improve their planning, managing and institutional governance.

In recent years, there has been increasing recognition of the need for sound and planned management of tourism destinations. From traditional marketing and promotion boards the trend is for Destination Management Organizations (DMOs) to become leading organizations with a broader mandate which includes strategic planning, coordination and management of a full range of activities within an adequate governance structure with the integration of different stakeholders operating in the destination under common goals. Destinations where such an organization is not still in place are increasingly creating or plan to create a DMO as the organizational entity to lead the way.

These developments stem from the urge to achieve an optimal management of the destination which ensures that the various authorities, all relevant stakeholders and professionals are coordinated by a leading entity under a coherent strategy and a collective vision in pursuit of a common goal, the competitiveness and sustainability of the destination. This approach should also engage the residents and the local community in the tourism policy and decision-making process and its implementation in a truly Public (P) – Private (P) – Community (C) approach. UNWTO – WTCF Workshop Buenos Aires, Argentina
26 September 2017
Location:

At the kind invitation of the Entity of Tourism of Buenos Aires (Argentina), the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) organized a Technical Workshop within the context of the Joint UNWTO – WTCF City Tourism Performance Research, 26 September 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Considering “Urban Tourism” as an economic activity with a high potential to stimulate local economic growth because of its complementarity with other economic activities, its contribution to GDP, job creation, foreign exchange and services exports, it is essential to monitor the tourism performance in urban destinations and to identify the areas related to “Destination Management”.

The UNWTO Secretariat in collaboration with WTCF (World Tourism City Federation) launched an initiative to showcase the good practices on “tourism performance” in several urban destinations. The workshop discussed the results of the research conducted and provided recommendations to the cities on the selected key performance areas.
