Alqueva Dark Sky Programme, Genuineland, Portugal

The Dark Sky Alqueva programme presents an innovative model of destination management that comprises six municipalities covering more than 3.000 km2 including Europe’s biggest artificial lake. The programme started as a partnership between public and private stakeholders to create astro-tourism and stargazing tourism products. By leveraging the un-parallel dark skies of its environment, the expertise from the scientific community and the entrepreneurial efforts of local organizations, Alqueva Dark Sky has become a benchmark to develop scientific tourism with a holistic destination management strategy. Alqueva Dar Sky programme is a leader in promoting actions to decrease light pollution, creating innovative astro-trourism products and engaging the scientific community in its destination development.
