Working Languages

The working languages of the Summit will be Turkish, English, French and Spanish.  Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in these languages.

How to get to Istanbul

İstanbul Atatürk international airport is located approximately 24 km from the Istanbul hotels area.  A taxi into the city centre is the quickest option, with the fare costing approximately 16-20 euros and taking around half an hour. It is a 24 hour service and they operate on taxi meter. Another cheap option is to take an airport bus (Havataş), which costs 5 euros and takes 35-60 minutes to get to hotels area. Distance to Haliç Congress Center 25 kilometers.

Air Transport

Turkish Airlines is the official airline of the Global Summit on City Tourism and offers a special discounted rate for the international participants:

Up to 20% on Business Class
Up to 15% on Economy Class

Please show the event registration letter to the Sales Office of Turkish Airlines in your country if you plan to attend to the Global Summit on City Tourism via Turkish Airlines.

Entry Formalities and Visa

All participants in the congress will require a valid passport and a visa for visiting Turkey. Please contact your nearest Turkey Embassy/Consulate for this purpose. You can reach the updated information through the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs web site by the following link:

• The term "official passports" covers diplomatic, service, special and official passports.
• Passports should be valid at least 90 days longer than the expiry date of the requested visa.
• Despite the visa regime applied towards the citizens of a country, the travel document holders of that country need to obtain visa from Turkish missions beforehand.
• All foreigners, except for those exempt from visa requirement, should obtain their visas at the Turkish missions. Those foreigners, who can obtain sticker type visas at the Turkish border gates, may also have their visas at the Turkish missions, alternatively.
• If you have a valid visa, you do not need a residence permit up to 90 days. On the other hand, foreigners who shall reside, work or study in Turkey, should register themselves at the nearest local police department upon their arrival in Turkey, regardless of the validity of their visa.


Participants are requested to make their reservations as soon as possible (preferably before 15 Oct, 2012) with one of the hotels listed in the list of partner hotels. Participants are requested to fill in the accommodation form which can also be found below.

The local currency is Turkish Lira (TL). The exchange rate changes daily. Foreign currency can be exchanged at the airport, banks, hotels and exchange offices. International Credit Cards are widely accepted.


Banks business hours are from Monday to Friday, 09:00-16:30. Banks are closed on Saturday and Sunday and Public Holidays. All banks have similar exchange rates.


Based on the data provided by well known statistical institutes of the world for major metropols, Istanbul is one of the few with a minimum amount of crime. Despite its intensive population and traffic, you can walk through every part of the city without any problems.

Time Zone

Turkish Standard Time is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time.


Average day temperature in Istanbul at the beginning of November is around 8-10°C. Even though it is not too cold you are recommended to bring sweater for chilly evenings and umbrella or raincoat for possible rainy days.

Postal Services

Hotels often provide basic postal services. Post offices are open daily except Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.


General Household electric power is 220 Volts.


The Organizes can accept no responsibility for accidents or damage to the private property of participants. Please make your own arrangements for health insurance and any other insurance desired.

Driving Licence

International driving licences are recognised throughout Turkey. Car rental firms ask for a valid national licence or an international licence.


Most shops in Istanbul are generally open from 09:00 to 19:00, Monday to Saturday. Some of the supermarkets, shops, newpaper kiosks, restaurants and food shops are also open on Sunday. In all the big shopping centers and you can also enjoy tax free.


It is possible to find various kinds of Turkish, Western, Asian, and other cuisine in Istanbul.


All the taxis in the city are yellow colored with a sign “taksi” written on them. As historical places and shopping centers are very close to the hotels, it is quite economical to use this transportation. Taxis have a taximeter system with reasonable.
